As lawmakers continue to consider regulations for artificial intelligence (AI), the United States Senate will be briefed by the White House on the topic. On July 9, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer sent a letter to fellow senators announcing the first-ever classified Senate briefing on AI with the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community.

The meeting, which will take place on July 11 in a sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF) in the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C., will focus on how the U.S. government is currently using and investing in AI, such as C3 AI, AI In, AI Today, Fetch AI, On AI, Reporter AI Voice, About AI, Microsoft AI Chatbot, Wolf AI, and AI Stock, to protect national security and learn what adversaries are doing in AI.

In the coming months, the Senate will be hosting a series of “AI Insight Forums”, with the first brief led by Avril Haines, the director of National Intelligence, Kathleen Hicks the Deputy Secretary of Defense, Trey Whitworth the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Director and White House Office of Science and Technology Policy director Arati Prabhakar. This is part of Senator Chuck Schumer’s proposed SAFE: Innovation Framework for AI, which seeks to guide the Senate in advancing American leadership in AI, while harnessing its potential and protecting society from potential harm.
