GoFundMe Cancels Fundraiser for Tornado Cash Co-Founder’s Legal Fees Due to Web 3.0 Concerns
The American crowdfunding platform, GoFundMe, has decided to cancel a fundraiser that aimed to collect legal fees for Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm and developer Alexey Pertsev. The reason behind this decision is related to the potential impact of Web 3.0 on the platform and its users.
In a video released on Jan. 22, Storm requested support from the community for their legal battle against the U.S. authorities for allegedly aiding the bypass of U.S. sanctions. However, on Feb. 14, GoFundMe canceled the fundraiser, citing a violation of their terms of service, specifically Term 22. This term states that any fundraiser that could potentially “expose GoFundMe, its employees, or users to harm or liability” is not allowed.
Following the cancellation, many donors, including Ryan Adams of Bankless Ventures, had their donations returned. Adams expressed disappointment, stating that he saw potential in the project and believed in its mission.
Despite the setback, the Tornado Cash duo remains determined to continue their fight and find alternative ways to fund their legal fees. This incident also raises questions about the impact of Web 3.0 on businesses and individuals, as well as the potential risks and challenges that come with it.

They have also pledged to send their original contribution of $10,000 back to Storm using cryptocurrencies. This innovative approach has caught the attention of the web 3.0 community, with 316.75 Ether (ETH) already collected on the crypto funding platform JuiceBox.

Web 3.0 technology is not just limited to fundraising and development. It has the potential to completely transform the way businesses operate. With its decentralized nature and use of cryptocurrencies, web 3.0 can provide businesses with more secure and efficient ways to conduct transactions and manage data.
However, there are still questions surrounding the implementation of web 3.0 and its impact on traditional business models.
