Proof of Play Raises $33 Million for Web3 Games
Proof of Play, a company led by Farmville co-creator Amitt Mahajan, announced on Sept. 21 that it had raised $33 million to create Web3 games. Mahajan is the CEO of Proof of Play, and Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear is a board member.
The funding was co-led by Chris Dixon at Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Neil Mehta at Greenoaks. Other investors included Naval Ravikant, Balaji Srinivasan, the founders of Twitch, Anchorage Digital, Mercury, Firebase, Zynga and Alchemy.
In December 2022, Proof of Play released a closed beta of its first game, Pirate Nation. The company claims that its “set of technological and product innovations” will let players “quickly immerse themselves in fun gameplay” without needing to learn about blockchain first.
Web 3.0 Companies
Proof of Play has committed to decentralization, and Pirate Nation is a “Forever Game” that runs without external servers or creator intervention, with plans to open-source its technology framework to decentralize further. The team at Proof of Play consists of members from major gaming and web companies, such as Epic Games, Zynga, EA, Activision and Google.
In 2023, multimillion-dollar funding rounds from Web 3.0 companies have become commonplace. For example, EVE Online developer CCP Games raised $40 million in March to develop a new spinoff EVE game, while Hyperplay secured $12 million in June to further develop its distribution platform and Steam competitor.
