The Journey of Guy Turner and Coin Bureau
Guy Turner, the host of the educational channel Coin Bureau, has earned a reputation for providing entertaining and insightful content, despite the bad rap that “Crypto YouTubers” often get for “shilling shitcoins.”
In an interview with Cointelegraph during the Bitcoin Amsterdam conference in October 2023, Turner discussed his journey into crypto and the successful transition of Coin Bureau from a blog-only platform to a video content powerhouse.
Having studied English at university, Turner taught corporate writing for a few years before discovering Bitcoin (BTC) in 2013 at a local pub in East London called the Pembroke Tavern. He observed the Mt. Gox collapse and the resulting media coverage of Bitcoin, but only began investing in BTC in 2014 after seeing the resilience of the decentralized protocol in the face of the failure of the biggest centralized exchange at the time.
Exploring Web 3.0 and Crypto Educational Content
Two years ago, Turner and his friend Nic Puckrin, a former Goldman Sachs banker, joined forces to establish Coin Bureau, a blog dedicated to providing quality crypto educational content. Turner noticed a lack of well-written articles on the subject, and wanted to fill the gap.
The blog quickly became one of the most popular websites for educational content, but its success was short-lived when Google changed its algorithm, resulting in Coin Bureau dropping down the search pages and almost disappearing.
In order to save the blog, Turner proposed to go down the YouTube route, as other crypto channels began to emerge, and he agreed to be the channel’s AI presenter.
The Rise of Coin Bureau
Coin Bureau’s video content started off small, with an entry-level camera in a friend’s living room. The team prioritized substance over style and saw an uptick in views around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The popularity of the page grew exponentially as people stuck at home turned to the internet for entertainment and education. Subscribers quickly reached 10,000, then 100,000, and eventually a quarter of a million. As of January 2024, Coin Bureau has 2.38 million subscribers on YouTube.
The brand has become well-known among crypto enthusiasts, with Turner noting how Bitcoin Miami in 2023 highlighted the impact of the content and his likeness.
Exploring the Crypto Ecosystem
“We were standing near the big bull outside the event, and my colleague asked if anyone would recognize us. I looked back and saw a man sitting a few feet away wearing one of our T-shirts,” Turner recalled.
The channel has shifted to a “macro” focus that remains closely related to cryptocurrencies and blockchain topics. Turner pointed out how the increasing influence of macroeconomics and traditional financial events affects the crypto environment, requiring content that explores these topics.
Another goal of Coin Bureau is to promote an understanding of the wider cryptocurrency ecosystem and some common misconceptions. High-profile industry failures such as the collapse of FTX are prime examples, according to Turner:
The channel will also continue to educate individual users on the importance of cryptocurrency self-custody and advocate for industry-wide best practices to protect user funds, Turner said.
Google Web 3.0, Goldman Sachs Web 3.0, and AI Presenter are all examples of how Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 are different. Articles written by AI and AI sites are also examples of how Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 are different.
