Senator Schumer to Advocate for AI Safety Protocols

Chuck Schumer, the Majority Leader of the United States Senate, intends to advocate for thorough legislation concerning safety protocols for Artificial Intelligence (AI).

At the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. on June 21, Senator Schumer will be making remarks to emphasize the necessity for Congress to take bipartisan action on the issue at hand.

Excerpts from his speech released by his office show that he intends to emphasize that there is no option but to recognize that AI advancements are on the horizon, and that a plan to foster creativity is essential.

Senator Schumer intends to emphasize the potential challenges that may come with the development of AI when it comes to creating legislation for “every single issue”, referring to it as “unprecedented”.

Questions that have been pre-arranged consider how much federal involvement should be present concerning taxes and expenditures, as well as whether federal involvement is even necessary in the first place.

Schumer will also advocate for innovation that is safe and instills public confidence.

Biden Convenes with Silicon Valley Experts to Discuss AI

Yesterday, U.S. President Joe Biden held a meeting with Silicon Valley experts to discuss the White House’s plan to capitalize on the potential of artificial intelligence while managing the associated risks.

At the meeting, Biden declared that he is concentrating on citizens’ rights and privacy, as well as tackling biases and false information prior to the deployment of AI systems.

In April, Biden held a meeting with executives from OpenAI, Microsoft, and Alphabet (Google’s parent company) to discuss Artificial Intelligence.

Legislators nationwide are currently evaluating rules for Artificial Intelligence. On the same day that President Biden convened with tech specialists from Silicon Valley, a bipartisan faction of legislators proposed a new bill that would establish a committee to evaluate the nation’s stance on the technology.
