On Sept. 9, Dmitry Buterin, Vitalik’s father, posted on X that his son’s account had been compromised. The post, which has since been deleted, claimed to celebrate the arrival of “Proto-Danksharding coming Ethereum” and included a malicious link to an alleged free commemorative non-fungible token (NFT). Unsuspecting victims were enticed to connect their wallets, only to have their funds stolen.

CryptoPunk NFT Collection Suffers Losses

The recent incident has caused Ethereum developer Bok Khoo, commonly known as “Bokky Poobah” on X, to report losses in his CryptoPunk NFT collection. At this point, the lowest price for a CryptoPunk NFT is 46.99 Ether, which is equal to around $76,837.

ZachXBT, a popular figure in the crypto community with 438,200 followers, has been providing updates on the hacker’s activity. The most valuable NFT stolen so far is “CryptoPunk #3983”, valued at 153.62 Ether, or approximately $250,543.

The user “Satoshi 767” on X suggested that Vitalik Buterin might not have taken proper security precautions for his X account.

Vitalik’s Poor Op-Sec and Crypto Hacking

“I hate to be the one to say it, but Vitalik should take accountability for his poor op-sec and compensate those affected,” noted ZachXBT, suggesting that Buterin’s oversight led to the attack. However, ZachXBT challenged these allegations, asserting that Buterin’s high profile makes him a target for various forms of crypto hacking attempts: “You do not know yet whether it was a SIM swap. Vitalik is a big enough target to where an insider could have been paid off or a chain link crypto panel was used,” he stated.
