Web 3.0 Usernames for Instant Messaging

Unstoppable Domains (UD) has recently rolled out an instant messaging system for Web3 usernames, according to an Aug. 23 announcement from principal engineer Aaron Quirk. This system is available for .crypto, .wallet, .polygon and other UD-registered usernames and can be used on most apps that use XMTP, such as the UD iOS app and website, Coinbase Wallet, and Lens protocol apps like Lenster and Buttrfly. The Android version of UD will soon be providing this feature as well.

The messaging system is powered by the extensible message transport protocol (XMTP), which encrypts messages and ensures that they remain available even if UD shuts down. As per the announcement, “Your messages will be preserved and accessible to you no matter what happens to Unstoppable.”

Web3 usernames have been in existence since 2017, enabling crypto users to link their crypto addresses — long strings of characters that represent accounts — to simpler, more memorable names. For instance, the hard-to-recall 0xd8dA6BF26964aF9D7eEd9e03E53415D37aA96045 can be replaced with the much easier “Vitalik.eth.”

The utility of these crypto usernames is being extended to other applications, including messaging. For example, Coinbase Wallet launched an instant messaging system on July 12, allowing users to communicate with each other through .eth or .cb.id usernames. XMTP is used by both Coinbase Wallet and Lens, making it possible for the two projects to be integrated.

Integrating Unstoppable Domains with Web3 Projects

Unstoppable Domains, which offers usernames ending in .crypto or .polygon, has now solved the issue of extending their shared system. This means that users of Lens apps or Coinbase Wallet can now communicate with each other using their Unstoppable Domains usernames, in addition to other methods.

The company is also set to release an integration with Push Protocol, which will allow users to sign up to receive notifications from Web3 projects. These projects can then message users through the Unstoppable Domains website or app.

On April 26, Unstoppable Domains partnered with Binance.US, allowing its users to register names ending in .BinanceUS. Furthermore, the company reached a truce with the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) on July 17, allowing ENS .eth names to be sold in the UD store for the first time.
