Layer-2 Scaling Protocol Starknet to Double Rollup Cost Savings with Ethereum’s Dencun Upgrade

The upcoming Ethereum hard fork, Dencun, set to take place on March 13, will have a significant impact on the cost of rollups, and the Starknet Foundation is taking advantage of this opportunity to introduce additional fee-saving initiatives on their Layer-2 scaling protocol.

One of the key changes brought about by the Dencun upgrade is Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP-4844), which revolutionizes how rollups store data on the mainnet. Rollups, which process transactions off-chain and submit a summary proof to the Ethereum blockchain, will now have a new, cheaper way to add data to blocks using blob space instead of call data for storage.

This new approach, dubbed “proto-danksharding,” allows rollups to attach data blobs to blocks that are not accessible to the Ethereum Virtual Machine and are automatically deleted after 18 days. This is a drastic improvement over the previous method, which required all Ethereum nodes to process and store the data indefinitely.

David Silverman, Vice President of Product at Polygon Labs, has praised this change, stating that it provides the same security guarantees as the previous method but at a significantly lower cost for rollups.

Starknet Prepares for Immediate Reduction in Gas Fees

Developers in the crypto ecosystem are anticipating a decrease in gas fees from layer-2 solutions in the near future. However, this may be delayed as rollups undergo governance and upgrade processes to switch their contracts from using call data to the more cost-effective blob space.

The Starknet Foundation has announced a hard fork upgrade, set to coincide with Dencun, that will transition to version 0.13.1. This update will move away from the expensive call data method and towards the more efficient blob transaction type, resulting in significant fee reductions.

Layer 2 solutions are expected to benefit greatly from this change, as call data currently accounts for 90% of the gas fees Starknet pays to post transactions on the Ethereum mainnet.

According to StarkWare product manager and blockchain researcher Ilia Volokh, the shared prover (SHARP) used by Starknet will now utilize the blob space. This prover sends state diffs, which contain information on contract storage and deployments, to Ethereum as call data.

Volokh predicts that the effects of this upgrade will be seen within an hour of Dencun’s implementation, with immediate benefits for users. The SHARP prover uses recursive proof technology, which bundles previous proofs into batches called trains. A new hash system introduced in 2024 will increase the capacity of these trains and improve the protocol’s efficiency.
