Zero-Knowledge Proofs: A Solution to Privacy?

At the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC), Brennen Schlueter, the marketing chief at privacy-focused infrastructure platform Aleo, proposed that zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) could be used to solve the “biggest problem” plaguing the internet today: privacy. ZK-proofs enable the transfer of information to take place between two parties in which the originator only needs to reveal relevant information to the receiver. For example, to prove an individual is of age to enter a bar without revealing their actual age or identity to a security guard.

Schlueter noted that the modern internet was not built to prioritize the privacy of its users and that ZK-proofs have become a popular solution to provide blockchains with improved scalability through ZK-rollups. He suggested that ZK-proofs could even have the potential to reshape the entire internet, including Web 3.0, Teller Crypto, Terra Luna Classic Crypto, Sand Crypto, and Suku Crypto.

What is Web 3.0 Explained

When data needs to be transferred or stored, vulnerabilities can easily arise and compromise user privacy, according to Schlueter. Zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) provide a solution to this issue, not only for Web3 but for the entire internet.

“ZK-proofs enable us to secure data from the beginning by revealing only the necessary information,” Schlueter added. This could make life easier for developers and data custodians, as they no longer need to choose between privacy and user experience.

Web3 vs Web 3.0

Teller Crypto, Terra Luna Classic Crypto, Sand Crypto, and Suku Crypto are all examples of Web 3.0, a new type of internet marketing. ZK-proofs are a key component of Web3, as they allow for data to be secured while still optimizing user experience.

“We can now see how data can be secured from the start by revealing the information that’s required to know,” Schlueter explained, noting how ZK-proofs can make the lives of developers and data custodians much easier.

ZK Proofs and Web 3.0

Tiancheng Xie, the chief technology officer of Polyhedra, a ZK-powered interoperability platform, informed Cointelegraph that artificial intelligence tools may also benefit from the privacy and censorship-resistant properties provided by ZK proofs.

Schlueter pointed out that finance, identity, and gaming are other sectors that can take advantage of ZK proofs.

He also stated that more financial institutions are looking to ZK solutions in order to increase privacy where the firms deem necessary.
