Matter Labs Accused of Copying Code from Polygon Zero

Alex Gluchowski, the co-founder and CEO of zkSync creator Matter Labs, has denied allegations of copy-pasting code from Polygon Zero after the zero-knowledge scaling firm accused the former of using their system without proper attribution.

On Aug. 3, Polygon Zero published a blog post claiming that Matter Labs had incorporated “performance-critical components” of their zero-knowledge system called “Plonky2” into their recently-released proving system dubbed “Boojum,” without giving credit to the original authors. The company stated that such behavior is detrimental to the web 3.0 ecosystem, as it could potentially hurt smaller development teams as better-funded competitors could simply reappropriate their work without proper attribution.

Responding to the accusations, Gluchowski denied the claims of copy-pasting the code. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the executive addressed the issues brought up by Polygon Zero, stressing that every decision made toward building zkSync was based on integrity and transparency.

Matter Labs CEO noted that Polygon Zero team’s enthusiasm for their work may have caused them to make rushed and inaccurate statements. “Today’s accusations are unwarranted, misleading, and incredibly disappointing coming from a team I highly respect,” he wrote.

Gluchowski said that Plonky2 and Boojum are implementations of RedShift construction, which was introduced by Matter Labs three years prior to the Plonky2 paper. The executive claimed that the creators of Plonky2 did not give them credit, but did mention Redshift in the paper.

Despite this, the CEO admitted that it “could have been handled better” and said they would follow the more standard approach for attribution pointed out by the community.
