Ethereum Name Service open to building own layer 2: ENS director

The Focus on Layer-2 Networks in Ethereum Name Service’s Development of Web 3.0

Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is placing a strong emphasis on incorporating layer-2 networks into its protocol for the development of Web 3.0, according to ENS executive director Khori Whittaker.

In an interview with Cointelegraph, Whittaker revealed that the ENS team is currently considering two options for its integration: utilizing an existing Ethereum layer-2 network or creating its own in-house layer 2, referred to as “the identity layer.”

Whittaker also shared that the majority of discussions among ENS developers revolve around utilizing Optimism for layer-2 development.

Additionally, Whittaker mentioned the potential use of zero-knowledge proofs in future layer-2 development, which play a crucial role in safeguarding user information on public blockchains.

The Challenges and Potential of Web 3.0: An Interview with the Ethereum Name Service

Web 3.0, also known as the third generation of the internet, presents a number of obstacles and opportunities for the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), according to spokesperson Brantly Millegan.

ENS, a protocol that allows users to purchase a “.eth” domain name, faces challenges due to its structure and lack of awareness within the Ethereum ecosystem. This innovative service simplifies the complex wallet address system by providing a user-friendly domain name for transferring and receiving funds on the Ethereum network.

In a recent partnership with GoDaddy, ENS now allows users to link their .eth names to traditional Web2 domains, such as those ending in .com, at no extra cost. Millegan believes that this collaboration will help increase awareness and adoption of ENS among major institutions.

However, ENS is still reliant on developers and builders to integrate it into their projects and promote its use. Millegan acknowledges the need to improve awareness and is actively working towards this goal. By expanding partnerships and collaborations, ENS hopes to solidify its place as a key player in the Web 3.0 landscape.

According to Whittaker, the world still sees cryptocurrency as a strange and mysterious space, often only hearing about scandals and the fluctuating prices of tokens. However, he believes that the partnership between Sapien and GoDaddy could facilitate the widespread adoption of blockchain technology by making it easier for average internet users to understand and utilize it.

Whittaker envisions a future where the distinction between Web2 and Web3 becomes irrelevant, and all technologies simply blend into the background. He hopes that the internet and blockchain will merge seamlessly, creating a unified experience for users.
