Twitter Imposes Temporary Restrictions on Posts

Twitter, a social media platform, is imposing a temporary restriction on the amount of posts that users can view daily due to the “extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation” observed, as reported by executive chairman Elon Musk.

In a post dated July 1, Musk stated that verified accounts would be restricted to 10,000 posts per day, while unverified and newly unverified accounts would be limited to 1,000 and 500 posts per day, respectively.

In the past few days, Twitter users have experienced various issues on the platform, such as difficulty accessing tweets, missing timelines, and receiving a “rate limited exceeded” message. This has prompted the hashtags #TwitterDown and #TwitterFail to trend in certain areas.

Downdetector, a real-time outage monitor website, has received thousands of reports from users in the last 24 hours indicating Twitter is experiencing outages.

Is The Service Down reports that France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the East and West Coasts of the United States seem to be the areas most impacted.

Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey Respond to System Manipulation

Elon Musk did not explain what could be responsible for harvesting Twitter’s information or go into detail about the root cause of the “system manipulation” assertion, yet he stated that its data was being “plundered” to such an extent that it was diminishing the experience for users.

Some believe that the intense data harvesting is a result of web-browsing AI chatbots, like OpenAI’s GPT-4.

Twitter’s developer documents state that rate limits are employed to regulate the amount of requests sent to Twitter’s application program interface (API).

“The document notes that these limits enable us to offer a dependable and expandable API that our developer community can trust in,”

Twitter has deactivated an AI bot associated with memecoin after Elon Musk labeled it as a “scam crypto”.

In a tweet on July 2, Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and former CEO of Twitter, was one of the few who supported the recent actions, saying that “managing Twitter is difficult” and that the choice was probably made for the betterment of the platform.

He stated that he would prefer for Twitter to transition to a protocol similar to Bitcoin and Nostr, one that is completely resistant to censorship.

Outside the office, Musk appears to be preparing for a potential MMA bout against fellow billionaire and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
